VastuuKaista – how we improved the reliability of taxi services

Taksikuutio’s new service helps dispatch companies verify the credentials of taxi operators. Everyone benefits – from drivers to end-users.

For dispatch companies, maintaining the reliability and quality of taxi services is a key competitive advantage. However, the challenge lies in the fact that a vast number of independent providers operate under their umbrella. While dispatch companies are responsible for the services delivered, monitoring the independent operators has so far been slow and complex.

To address this, Taksikuutio – operating under the Finnish Taxi Association – set out to offer its members a straightforward way to conduct the necessary background checks on taxi operators. Having worked with Taksikuutio for many years, we at Taiste were excited to take on the challenge. And so, VastuuKaista was born.

Towards automation

By law, taxi companies are required to submit the following documents to dispatch companies:

  • Verification of registration in the prepayment register, employer register, and VAT register
  • Excerpt from the trade register
  • Statement on tax liabilities and any records of payment defaults
  • Confirmation of employee pension insurance arrangements and payments, or proof of a payment agreement regarding overdue pension contributions
  • Information on the applicable collective agreement or key terms of employment
  • Details of occupational health care provision

In addition, the service also separately monitors, for example, the validity of the transport permit.

Previously, gathering and reviewing these documents was largely a manual process. It was slow – made even more demanding by the requirement that the documents be no more than three months old.

How could this all be automated? The Suomi.fi service connects a wide range of government services and APIs. By building the solution around it, we were able to integrate all the necessary sources of information into one system. For taxi operators, it all appears as a simple interface that turns a previously frustrating task into something that can be completed in just minutes.

Benefits for all parties

VastuuKaista fits naturally into Taksikuutio’s wider Kaista service portfolio, which also includes services for entrepreneurs and wellbeing services counties. The existing architecture could be leveraged to ensure rapid implementation.

VastuuKaista is a significant step forward in combating the grey economy and reducing the administrative burden for both dispatch companies and taxi operators. It also allows for more effective oversight, improving the overall quality of service – something that ultimately benefits consumers as well.

This project stands as a testament to the advantages of long-term collaboration. Familiar clients allow us to build on previously developed solutions and working models – and to ground our efforts in a deeper understanding of the operational environment.

As part of the Kaista product family, we have also launched a free-of-charge ValvontaKaista tool for public procuring entities and dispatch companies to monitor businesses that fall within the scope of VastuuKaista.
