MusiClock, an application developed for PerTunes by Taiste, has won the Express Award at this year's Interaction Awards on February 8 in New York. This is the first time that a Finnish company has been awarded at the competition.
MusiClock is an innovative iOS app that teaches music theory in a whole new way. By rotating an interactive "musiclock" and playing a virtual keyboard along with various pre-recorded backing tracks, the user gets acquainted with musical scales and quickly learns how they are formed and used in practice.
The app is based on a concept by young visionary Perttu Pölönen. Pölönen felt that the way music theory was being taught at schools was needlessly complex and eventually came up with the basic idea for MusiClock. Together with his brother Pietu, Perttu formed a company called PerTunes, whose goal was to turn the brilliant idea into a mobile app. This is where Taiste joined in as a developer.
The result of the collaboration has been a success on all accounts: the user reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, and the app has been noted by international music and tech publications.
The Interaction Awards competition is held annually by Interaction Design Association (IxDA) – the biggest worldwide community for interaction designers. Empowered by over 80 000 members, the association organises events for both professionals and students of the field in 173 cities. In Finland, IxDA is active in Helsinki, Tampere and Turku.Interaction Week - IxDA's main event of the year - was held in Helsinki at the Finlandia Hall last year. The audience consisted of 1200 participants from 38 countries.
